Where History Meets the Spirit of the West Our name pays homage to the year 1883—a monumental time when the city of Medora was founded by the Marquis de Mores. It was a historic year of convergence: in September 1883, within a span of just a few days, three U.S. Presidents passed through or visited this newly founded frontier town in the Dakota Territory. Sitting President Chester A. Arthur, former President Ulysses S. Grant, and a young future President Theodore Roosevelt all stepped foot in Medora. Drawn in by the untamed spirit of the West, it was an experience that would ultimately shape Roosevelt's lifelong conservation ethic.

Today, Hotel 1883 invites families and travelers to do the same: to follow in the footsteps of legends, get away, spend time together, and reconnect with nature.
