the strenuous life hike

Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays

Approximately 90 Minutes
Approximately 3 Miles | 374 ft Elevation gain.

Lead by Theodore Roosevelt reprisor, Joe Wiegand

This hike lives up to TR’s famous 1899 speech “The Strenuous Life”. You’ll cross Coal Vein Canyon head up to Reclamation Point, Horse Stable Overlook, and eventually land on Schafer Point—the exact location Harold Schafer stood when he dreamed up this magical Medora. It’s a great out-and-back experience!

NOTE: AFTER HEAVY, LATE NIGHT, OR EARLY MORNING RAIN WHEN PORTIONS OF THE TRAIL BECOME SLICK WITH “GUMBO MUD” THERE WILL BE NO GUIDED HIKE & TRAILS MAY BE CLOSED UNTIL CONDITIONS ARE SAFE – LIKELY LATER IN THE DAY WHEN SUN & WIND HAVE DRIED THE TRAILS.

Be careful of falling rocks on overhangs and steep edges.

Ground is often uneven and loose.

There are many steep edges and inclines. Watch where you are stepping at all times.

Do not hike in inclement and stormy weather.

Poisonous snakes can be found on the trail in the form of the Prairie Rattlesnake.

Be aware of ticks and other small insects when hiking through areas with foliage.
